UN Women and Avon Say NO to domestic violence

March 2010

The UK National Committee for UN Women and Avon UK enter a third year of partnership with the launch of the Avon Empowerment Ring.

Marking International Women’s Day on 8th March, the Empowerment Ring has been launched to raise funds for the prevention of domestic violence and to raise awareness of the problem. Anna Segatti, President of Avon UK, encourages women to wear the ring with pride: “It’s a challenge for a beauty brand to take on the ugly issue of domestic violence but at Avon we believe that if you can empower a woman, you can change the world”.

UN Women will receive 10% of the proceeds from the ring’s sale to support its work combating violence against women across the world. The remainder will be shared between Refuge UK and Women’s Aid, two UK charities working with women and children suffering from domestic abuse.

In 2009 proceeds from the sale of Avon’s Empowerment Necklace enabled UN Women to make a significant donation to the UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women and to fund a conference on domestic violence to be held later this year. The UN Trust Fund, which UN Women manages from New York, is used to make grants to support the most innovative and effective strategies worldwide. Grantee success stories include a national television campaign in India reaching 124 million people in 4 months and increased access to justice for women survivors of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo through equipping 300 civil society leaders with new knowledge. The Empowerment Necklace will be on sale again in 2010.

UN Women is extremely grateful to Avon for its continuing partnership and support.
