Progress for Women Is Progress for All
The UK National Committee for UNIFEM is pleased to announce that it has partnered with Avon UK to “Speak Out Against Domestic Violence” in 2009.
To commemorate International Women’s Day on 8 March 2009, Avon launched the Avon Empowerment necklace to raise funds for and awareness of domestic violence. UNIFEM UK will receive 20% of the proceeds from the sale of the necklace in 2009. These funds will support UNIFEM’s Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women, development of a multi-sector conference to raise awareness of domestic violence in the UK and abroad, and the creation of a domestic violence module for the UNIFEM UK Education Programme.
“We are very happy to partner with Avon who are particularly working with organisations to stop violence against women, both in the UK and abroad, by working with Refuge in the UK and UNIFEM worldwide,” said UNIFEM UK President, Zarin Hainsworth. “Violence against women is an abuse of human rights that no society should tolerate and we are pleased to launch this initiative just as the Government have launched a new consultation on violence against women. We are also keen to build on the recent legislation on domestic violence and to improve the protection of women in their homes, a place that should be a haven not a hell. We are sure that the partnership with Avon will greatly assist in this work.”
Avon’s support builds on its generous donation of proceeds from the sales of the Avon Empowerment bracelet in 2008. Avon’s gift marks the single largest corporate donation ever received by UNIFEM UK.

The silver-plated Avon Empowerment necklace costs £3.00. To buy a necklace and support UNIFEM UK, visit www.avonshop.co.uk
