Progress for Women Is Progress for All
11 Million Takeover Day was organised by the Children’s Commissioner for England, Sir Al Aynsley-Green, to celebrate the importance of children and young people in society, and to recognise their talents. School students Holly and Bonnie travelled up to London from Cornwall to take over the UN Women office in support of the Day.
UN Women was pleased to take part in the first ever 11 Million Takeover Day on 23 November. Holly and Bonnie, aged 14 and 15, are school friends who live in Penzance and Hayle in Cornwall. Both young women have a keen interest in the work of UN Women and because of this were invited to run the UK office for a day and gain a real life experience.
Holly said:
"I think it is very important to set up organisations for women, and to spread the awareness about these situations. I have really enjoyed today. It has been a great experience for me, and I really understand how it all works. I hope to have another opportunity to do something like this again – hopefully with UN Women!"
Bonnie said:
"I have always believed that men and woman are equal, and that without the equality of men and women world peace will not be attainable. I look forward to sharing this experience with my school friends in Cornwall."
Zarin Hainsworth, President of UN Women, thanked Holly and Bonnie for their efforts on 11 Million Takeover Day.
"Their enthusiasm for UN Women’s work on this important day is really encouraging. We look forward to working with them both again in the future. People of all ages, male and female, are welcome to join us."
